Where Machining Capacity Sits in Vietnam
Manufacturing here is regional. Knowing which cluster suits your part explains most of the price and schedule differences between quotes.
| Cluster | What it is built around | Good fit | Where it is thin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bac Ninh and Bac Giang | Electronics assembly and semiconductor back end. Amkor built its Bac Ninh plant here and Hana Micron operates in Bac Giang. | Jigs, fixtures, carriers, change parts and line hardware for assembly and test floors. | High purity vacuum and gas hardware. The supporting finishing and cleaning chain is thinner than the machining base. |
| Hanoi, Hung Yen and Vinh Phuc | General precision machining and mould work serving the northern electronics belt. | Plates, brackets, mould and die work, medium precision production parts. | Documentation depth varies widely, so audit inspection and certificates rather than machines. |
| Hai Phong and Quang Ninh | Port driven manufacturing, heavier fabrication and assembly. | Frames, weldments, covers and larger structural parts, with short road time to the port. | Fine precision and cleanroom oriented work is the exception rather than the norm. |
| Ho Chi Minh City and Saigon Hi-Tech Park | The oldest high tech cluster in the country. Intel has run assembly and test here for years. | Precision machining, test and assembly hardware, and the widest pool of English speaking engineering contacts. | Land and labour cost more than in the surrounding provinces, which shows in price on simple parts. |
| Binh Duong and Dong Nai | The industrial belt around Ho Chi Minh City. Deep general manufacturing base with many mid sized shops. | Volume machined parts, fabrication, plating and finishing capacity, competitive pricing. | Semiconductor specific process discipline has to be verified shop by shop. |
| Da Nang and the centre | A smaller and newer manufacturing base, growing around electronics and supporting industries. | Selected precision work, and a useful alternative when northern and southern capacity is full. | Fewer finishing partners nearby, so multi step parts travel further between operations. |
This is a working picture of where capability concentrates, not a supplier directory. Individual shops vary far more than their province does, which is why we audit the shop rather than the region.
What the region actually changes
Three things, and only three, move because of where a shop sits.
- Finishing distanceAnodize and electropolish are bought outside the shop. A finisher two provinces away adds days to every order, every time.
- Export routingNorthern shops route through Hai Phong or Noi Bai, southern shops through Cat Lai or Tan Son Nhat. It changes freight cost and transit, not quality.
- The customer base that trained themA shop that grew up serving electronics assembly thinks in repeat lots and takt time. One that grew up on general fabrication thinks in one off jobs. Both are useful, for different parts.
How to use this when sourcing
Start from the part, not the map.
- Line hardware, jigs and change parts for a plant in the north are usually best made in the north, because the delivery loop is short and the shops already speak that language.
- Chamber, vacuum and gas hardware is a capability question, not a location question. There are few qualified chains anywhere in the country, so take the shop that has one.
- Large frames and weldments follow logistics. Machining a two metre base far from the port adds cost you never see on the quote.
- If a part needs an unusual finish, ask where the finisher is before you compare lead times. That single answer explains most schedule differences.
